Louisville Asphalt Paving is a paving contractor serving homeowners and businesses across Louisville and Jefferson County. We pave new asphalt driveways, replace and resurface worn-out ones, and handle commercial work from small lots to large parking areas. Every job is built the right way, on a properly graded and compacted stone base, because on our soil that base is what decides whether a driveway lasts five years or twenty.
Louisville sits on heavy clay soil that swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and our winters run through freeze-thaw cycles that crack and heave asphalt laid on a thin or poorly drained base. That is why we spend as much time on the ground underneath as on the asphalt itself, grading for drainage and compacting a deep stone base before a drop of asphalt goes down. We are licensed and insured, we pull the permit when the job ties into the street, and every project starts with a free on-site estimate.
The everyday signs a Louisville driveway is due for paving or a full replacement.
A few hairline cracks are normal, but when they spread into a connected, alligator-like pattern, water is getting into the base and the asphalt is failing from underneath. Caught early it can be resurfaced; left alone it becomes a full replacement.
Potholes and low spots where water pools mean the base below has shifted or washed out, which is common on our clay soil. These do not heal on their own, and patching only buys time if the base is the real problem.
Asphalt that has gone gray and brittle and started shedding loose stone has lost the binder that holds it together. A fresh overlay or resurfacing restores the surface and protects what is underneath before it breaks up.
Most asphalt driveways last 15 to 20 years with care. If yours is past that, or you are building new, a full install on a proper base is the long-term answer. We tell you honestly which one you need.
Driveway paving, replacement and resurfacing, and commercial and parking lot paving across Louisville and Jefferson County.

A new asphalt driveway is what we do most, whether you are replacing a gravel or dirt drive or paving a brand-new build. We start by stripping the area and grading it to drain, then build and compact a crushed-stone base, usually six to eight inches on our clay soil, because that base is what carries the weight and keeps the asphalt from cracking later.
On top of the base we lay and compact the asphalt, typically around three inches for a residential driveway and more for anything that takes heavy trucks. We roll it hot for a tight, smooth surface, shape the edges, and slope everything so water runs off instead of pooling and working its way underneath.
We size the job to your driveway and your budget, give you one written price before we start, and pull the right-of-way permit when the drive ties into a city street. The on-site estimate is free, and we walk you through exactly what your ground needs.

If your driveway is cracking, potholed, or just worn out, you have two paths, resurfacing or a full replacement, and the honest answer depends on the base underneath. If the stone base is still solid, we can mill or clean the surface and lay a fresh asphalt overlay, which costs far less and adds years of life.
When the base has failed, water has gotten under the asphalt, or the driveway is heaving and sinking, resurfacing only hides the problem. In that case we tear out the old asphalt, rebuild and recompact the base, and repave it right, so you are not paying twice. We tell you which one you actually need, not which one costs more.
Either way we handle the demolition, haul-off, grading, and new surface, and we match the new work cleanly to your garage, walks, and the street. You get a written price and a straight recommendation at a free on-site look.

We pave and maintain commercial asphalt across Louisville, from small business lots and private roads to large parking areas. New construction gets the same base-first approach as a driveway, sized up for the traffic loads a lot has to carry, with proper drainage and compaction so it holds up under daily use.
For existing lots we handle mill-and-overlay resurfacing, patching and pothole repair, crack sealing, and sealcoating to extend the life of the surface, plus line striping and ADA layout so the lot is safe, clean, and compliant. We can phase the work to keep your business open.
Commercial jobs are scheduled around your hours and your budget, with a clear written scope and price up front. Whether it is a one-time repave or an ongoing maintenance plan, the estimate is free.
Most Louisville driveways are asphalt, and for good reason. When homeowners ask whether asphalt or concrete is the better choice here, the answer almost always comes down to cost, how each one handles our freeze-thaw winters and clay soil, and what it takes to keep it looking good.
A new asphalt driveway typically runs about half to two-thirds the cost of concrete for the same size, which is why most Louisville homeowners choose it. You get a durable, finished driveway for a fraction of the upfront price, and you can use it sooner.
Concrete is rigid, so when Louisville's ground freezes, thaws, and shifts on clay soil, it cracks, and those cracks are there to stay. Asphalt is flexible, so it moves with the ground instead of fighting it, which is a big reason it holds up better here when it is laid on a proper base.
When asphalt wears, you can resurface it with a fresh overlay or seal and patch it, often for a modest cost, and it looks new again. A cracked or spalled concrete slab usually has to be torn out and replaced. Asphalt also hides minor repairs far better.
An asphalt driveway can usually be installed in a day or two and driven on within a couple of days, versus a week or more of curing for concrete. Its dark surface also absorbs sun and melts snow and ice faster in winter.
The one thing that makes or breaks either material is what goes underneath. A driveway laid on a thin or poorly drained base fails no matter how good the surface looks on day one, which is why we build the base first and grade for drainage on every job. We give you an honest comparison for your property at a free on-site estimate.
Our base-first process, from the first grade to the final roll.
We come out, measure the driveway, check your drainage and soil, and give you a written price. When the job ties into a city street we pull the Louisville Metro right-of-way permit so the curb cut is done legally.
We strip out the old surface or vegetation, excavate to the right depth, and grade the ground to slope water away from your home and off the driveway. On Louisville's clay soil, getting the drainage right is what prevents future heaving and cracking.
We lay and compact a deep crushed-stone base, usually six to eight inches, in lifts. This base is the foundation that carries the load, and it is the step cut-rate pavers skip. We never do.
We lay the hot asphalt at the right thickness, compact it with a roller for a smooth, tight surface, shape and seal the edges, and clean up. Then we tell you exactly when you can walk on it and drive on it.
What you get when you hire a paving contractor who does it right the first time.
A driveway is only as good as what is under it. We build and compact a deep stone base and grade for drainage on every job, the step cut-rate crews skip and the reason their work fails in a few winters. It is also why ours lasts.
We tell you whether your driveway needs a cheaper overlay or a full replacement based on the base, not on which one makes us more money. If a repair will buy you years, we say so.
You get a clear written price before any work starts, covering the base, the asphalt, the edges, and cleanup. No change-order games once the equipment is on site.
We are licensed and insured, and we pull the Louisville Metro right-of-way permit when a job ties into the street, so the curb cut is legal and the work is to code. You are protected now and at resale.
Asphalt pricing comes down to size, how much base work the ground needs, and access, so these are honest ranges for planning, not a quote. Louisville prices run close to the national average, and your exact number comes from a free on-site measure.
A typical new residential driveway runs about $4,000 to $8,000 installed, depending on size, base depth, and access.
An overlay on a solid base costs far less than a full replacement; a failed base means a tear-out and repave.
Lots, private roads, and mill-and-overlay work priced per square foot after a site visit; sealcoat and striping quoted separately.
What moves the price: the square footage, how much excavation and base the clay soil needs, the asphalt thickness, how easy the site is to reach, whether an old surface has to be torn out and hauled off, and any permit or curb-cut work.
These are typical Louisville-area ranges to help you plan, not a quote. Every driveway is different, so the only firm number comes from a free on-site estimate.
Straight answers from the asphalt paving we do across Louisville and Jefferson County.
Most new residential driveways in Louisville run about $4,000 to $8,000 installed, or roughly $7 to $13 per square foot, depending on the size, how much base and excavation the ground needs, and access. Resurfacing an existing driveway costs less, around $2 to $5 per square foot. The only firm number comes from a free on-site measure.
For most Louisville driveways, asphalt. It costs about half to two-thirds what concrete does, it flexes with our freeze-thaw winters and clay soil instead of cracking like a rigid slab, and it is far cheaper to resurface and repair down the road. Concrete has its place, but for a standard driveway here asphalt is the better value.
A properly installed asphalt driveway lasts about 15 to 20 years in the Louisville area, sometimes longer with sealcoating every few years and crack repair as needed. The single biggest factor in how long it lasts is the base underneath, which is why we never cut that corner.
Resurfacing lays a fresh layer of asphalt over your existing driveway and works when the base underneath is still solid; it costs much less and adds years of life. Replacing means tearing out the old asphalt and rebuilding the base before repaving, which is what you need when the base has failed or the driveway is heaving and sinking. We tell you which one your driveway actually needs.
For most repaving on your own property you do not need a permit. But if the work ties into a public street, a new curb cut, or anything in the right-of-way, Louisville Metro requires an encroachment or right-of-way permit. We handle that permit as part of the job so the curb cut is done legally.
In Louisville you can pave most of the year thanks to our relatively mild winters, which is an advantage over colder cities that shut down from December to February. Spring through fall is ideal because warm, dry weather lets the asphalt compact and cure well. We book up fastest in spring, so planning ahead gets you on the schedule sooner.
We pave driveways, parking lots, and commercial asphalt across Louisville and the surrounding Jefferson County communities.
